Qualsiasi audiofilo, ed amante della musica
ben riprodotta, conosce ormai da molti anni il suono delle leggendarie cartucce Koetsu, e quelli, che hanno avuta la fortuna di inserirne una nel proprio
impianto, mantengono sempre viva la sensazione di un’esperienza musicale
insuperata. Pochi hanno avuto il privilegio di possedere una testina Koetsu e,
tra questi, molti se ne sono poi procurata una seconda, e magari anche una
terza, stabilendo un durevole ed affettuoso legame. In quest’epoca di pieno
"rinascimento" dell’analogico, e grazie agli sforzi compiuti dal figlio del
fondatore Mr. Sugano, le cartucce Koetsu sono felicemente disponibili per i
cultori dell’ascolto "vinilico", sebbene in quantità limitate, per la loro
natura di oggetti esclusivi e realizzati a mano.Per apprezzare appieno questi
componenti fondamentali di un impianto hi-fi veramente completo, bisogna
conoscere qualcosa di Yosiaki Sugano, artista, musicista, spadaccino,
calligrafo, uomo d’affari, dirigente commerciale e creatore delle più rinomate
cartucce fonografiche al mondo. In gioventù si dedicò alle realizzazione di
spade, alla scherma, alla calligrafia ed alla pittura, emulando il suo "eroe",
un’importante personaggio giapponese del XVII secolo, di nome Honami Koetsu
(calligrafo ed artista, nato a Kyoto nel 1558, divenne famoso per le sue
creazioni in lacca; i suoi numerosi interessi; i sorprendenti risultati della
sua opera, lo hanno reso una delle figure più creative nella storia dell’arte
giapponense).Negli anni ’70 Sugano iniziò a cimentarsi nella modifica di
cartucce fonografiche disponibili in commercio, sostituendone alcune parti con
altre di sua realizzazione. L’orecchio esperto, lo spiccato intuito e la sua
sensibilità di artista lo portarono a quella che sarebbe diventata un leggenda
in campo audio. Conscio del valore di quanto stava realizzando, chiamò la sua
cartuccia "Koetsu", in onore del suo personaggio di riferimento.Le ricerche di
Sugano coinvolsero università, industrie specializzate e valenti artigiani, al
fine di realizzare i componenti necessari all’assemblaggio dei suoi capolavori.
Sugano è stato anche uno dei primi ad usare rame puro al 99.99%, mentre
l’attuale produzione utilizza rame con purezza pari al 99,9999%. Il modello
Signature Platinum utilizza rame puro al 99,9999% ricoperto d’argento, ottenuto
attraverso un lento procedimento, mediante il quale una guaina di questo metallo
viene lentamente inserita sul conduttore di rame.Altri componenti metallici
vengono accuratamente realizzati e selezionati in base alle caratteristiche
magnetiche ed alla minor ossidazione. Gli elastomeri in gomma subiscono un
processo di pre-invecchiamento, idoneo a garantirne perfetta e stabile
consistenza, e sono prodotti su licenza da un’impresa specializzata. Materiali
magnetici particolari, compreso l’alnico, sono ampiamente utilizzati.
Attualmente viene impiegato il cobalto-samario, mentre i magneti al platino sono
appannaggio dei modelli più esclusivi. Esperti artigiani giapponesi realizzano
il corpo delle cartucce Koetsu in palissandro (Rosewood), verniciano con
particolari lacche il corpo delle Urushi od intagliano la pietra per le Onyx.
Infine, il massimo della cura è riservato alla produzione degli stili,
appositamente ideati e realizzati.L’ultima creazione della Koetsu è la Jade
Platinum che, come gli altri modelli Platinum, utilizza un set di magneti in
lega di platino. Il corpo della cartuccia è ricavato da un blocchetto di giada
e, per un lavoro così delicato, la Koetsu si avvale dell’opera di un esperto
artigiano. Da molto tempo nel laboratorio giapponese regnava la convinzione che
il miglior modo per eliminare i problemi di interfacciamento, tra stilo e
cantilever, fosse quello di realizzare i due componenti da un unico pezzo di
materiale. E’ così che è stato deciso di intraprendere questa strada e di
produrre il sistema stilo/cantilever da un unico pezzo di diamante!
L’applicazione e la valutazione dei risultati di una simile struttura
"monolitica", all’interno di una Jade Platinum, hanno dimostrato che questa
soluzione rappresenta l’interfaccia definitivo tra disco e fonorivelatore. Tale
nuovo sistema stilo/cantilever in blocco unico di diamante è ora disponibile,
come opzione, per il modello Jade Platinum.Oggi, dunque, i figli di Sugano fanno
rivivere, e continuano a creare, i capolavori della riproduzione musicale
analogica, sotto l’occhio vigile del vecchio maestro. Per tutti gli audiofili,
il viaggio verso il "nirvana" della musica non sarà completo senza l’esperienza
del suono di una testina Koetsu nel loro sistema.

Electrically, the Signature offers a more closely matched core and coil set.
Cosmetically, the Standard is distinguished by a sloped base when viewed

The Red Signature (Platinum) looks very much like
the Red Signature.The similarities however, stop there. The body of the Platinum
model is made from aged Rosewood which gives it a darker color tone. The
greatest difference though, is inside.The coils of the Pro IV are made of 6N
copper wire, painstakingly clad with a silver jacket. The magnets are made of
the proprietary (and very expensive) Platinum alloy which accounts for the
higher price. These powerful rare-earth magnets allow the cartridge to respond
aptly to even the most subtle movements in the cantilever/stylus assembly
resulting in the reproduction of delicate nuances in the music. However, output
for the Platinum models is lower than the others (0.25mV vs 0.6mV) and a good MC
phono-stage is recommended to demonstrate the cartridge’s true

Every
audiophile music lover knows of the legendary sound of Koetsu phono cartridges
from decades past. Those old enough to have experienced Sugano's Koetsus retain
the memory of a musical experience unequaled. Few were privilegedd to own and
enjoy a Koetsu. Many of the converted searched out second and third Koetsus,
assuring a long, cherished relationship.Now, in analog's Golden Renaissance and
through the efforts of Sugano's sons, Koetsu phono cartridges are again
available. Though limited in quantity due to their personal, handbuilt nature,
the Sugano family offers a range of models including the Rosewoods, the Urushi,
and the ultimate Koetsu, the Onyx Platinum.To fully appreciate Koetsu, we must
know Yosiaki Sugano, artist, musician, swordsman, calligrapher, business
executive and creator of the world's most renowned phono cartridges. In his
youth, choral singing introduced him to western music, He pursued sword making,
dueling, calligraphy and painting, emulating his hero, the 17th century Japanese
landmard figure, Honami Koetsu. In postwar Japan, Sugano rose to prominence in
one of Japan's largest industrial companies, yet continued to pursue his
passions, now including hi-fi.In the 1970's, Sugano began to experiment with
phono cartridges by substituting his own parts in commercially available models.
His keen ear and deductive reasoning, combined with an artist's sensibilities,
led to the creation of what would become a legend in audio. Sensing the moment,
Sugano named his cartridge after his hero, Koetsu. Sugano's quest led him to
enlist universities, specialized industries and master craftspeople to create
the special parts to go into his masterpieces. One of the first to use 4 nines
copper (99.99% pure), curent production uses 6 nines copper (99.9999% pure).
Platinum signature models feature silver cladding of the 6 nines copper, a
process where a silver sheath is slowly drawn over the copper conductor.
ltra-pure iron square plate formers were sourced for their most predictable
magnetic characteristics and lowest oxidation. Pre-aged to the perfect
consistency, rubber suspension parts are sourced under license with a rubber
damper manufacturer. Special magnetic materials, including Alnico have been
featured. Today, samarium-coblalt is used with platinum magnets reserved for the
flagship models. Japanese craftsmen carve the rosewood bodies, lacquer coat the
Urushi bodies, or cut stone for the onyx Platinum. Styli are specially designed
and precision ground for Koetsu. Today, Sugano's sons have revived his art and
continue to create musical masterpieces under the watchful eye of the old
master. For every music lover, your journey to musical nirvana is incomplete
